If by any chance the enemy manages to engage your artillery in melee, disengage square formation and charge in while pulling your artillery crew out of the fight. The idea is to discourage cavalry charges, as cavalry charges are often mounted in a solid block instead of a line, meaning they won't get stuck on the flanks as easily. If you have spare infantry units, set them up in square formation behind your artillery units, with fire at will off. Enemy units trying to charge your artillery head-on will usually get stuck on the infantry units on the flanks, unless you placed too many artillery units next to each other, creating a gap large enough for the enemy unit to pass without getting stuck in melee. If you place multiple cannon and puckle gun units next to each other, make sure to leave some space between them so they won't friendly fire if they're targeting along the line. Cannons and puckle guns should be incorporated into your main line, surrounded by infantry on both flanks. Most of my armies late game have 2 cannons, 2 howitzers, and a gatling gun or rocket troop if available, so 4-6 artillery units/full stack.
